Symptoms

On a Sun Storage 7000 Unified Storage System NDMP backup and restore has been successful, it is not possible to clone a tape, it fails with "Connect error: Connection refused"

Cause

For troubleshooting purpose NDMP daemon was started in debug mode and the collected message file contains "connection refused" messages due to a failed forward/reverse IP address resolution on DNS server.

Please contact Oracle Support to start the NDMP daemon in debug mode.

Debug mode is no longer necesary starting with the 2011.1.1.0 appliance code where ndmp logging is always enabled

The connection refused message was logged due to incorrect DNS reverse lookup for Sun Storage 7000 Unified System.

Networker log:

42597:nsrndmp_clone: mover connect: failed to establish connection
42803:nsrndmp_clone: Failed to send the MOVER_CONNECT message to the NDMP tape server.

Configuration:

DMA is Networker 7.5.3
Tape library and tape drives are connected to 7410 through 4GB FC HBA.

Solution

To avoid this error and ensure correct operation of the ZFS Storage Appliance, a fully working DNS environment is required which is able to do forward and reverse address resolution for the Appliance.
