Information in this document applies to any platform.
Symptoms
A VARY command takes a long time to complete. Issuing another VARY command returns the error message: "Overridden by another vary request".
Example of error messages in the acsss_event.log:
2011-03-01 14:53:21 VARY[48470]:
105 N va_cap_stat.c 1 2002
va_cap_states: CAP 3, 1,0: Overridden by another vary request
2011-03-01 15:18:00 VARY[49010]:
105 N va_lsm_stat.c 1 2458
va_lsm_state:st_lsm_vary: LSM 3, 1: Overridden by another vary request
2011-03-01 15:18:00 VARY[49010]:
105 N va_acs_stat.c 1 531
va_acs_states: ACS 3: Overridden by another vary request
Changes
Any of these events could have happened:
1. The library was IPL'd
2. A CAP operation terminated unexpectedly
3. ACSLS was restarted and HLI requests are queued immediately even before the LMU
recovery procedures are completed
Cause
Any of these events could cause the VARY problem:
1. The LSM fails to come online on time after an IPL or after ACSLS was cycled.
Example of an error message showing a VARY request that timed out:
2011-03-01 14:53:19 VARY[48470]:
126 N va_lsm_stat.c 1 2656
va_lsm_state:st_req_error: Timed out waiting for message
2. A CAP operation was interrupted by the LSM going offline (like after the main access door is opened or communication to the LSM resets). A VARY command to the CAP may not complete and cause succeeding VARY requests to the CAP to fail.
Solution
When the VARY request to online or offline a library component is not completing, terminate the VARY request by issuing this VARY command in cmd_proc:
ACSSA> VARY <component> <component-ID> offline force.
Then, vary the library component online.
ACSSA> VARY <component> <component-ID> online
If the VARY command continues to hang, there could be a problem with the library hardware or the ACSLS software. Gather pertinent ACSLS and library logs. Refer to these documents on how to gather the event logs:

Open a service request ticket to report this problem. Send the logs to the support engineer or attach the logs to the service request ticket in My Oracle Support.
