Symptoms

Auto cleaning not working
ACSLS not receiving cleaning message
HSC not receiving cleaning message
Drive not being cleaned

Cause

When automatic cleaning is enabled via ACSLS or HSC, they will automatically mount a cleaning tape on the next mount when they receive a "drive needs cleaning" message from the library after a dismount.  However, if automatic cleaning is enabled at the SL3000 library level via SL Console, the library is the one doing the automated cleaning.  When the library does automated cleaning, it does NOT send the drive needs cleaning message to ACSLS and HSC. ACSLS and HSC will never know that the drive needs to be cleaned.  The library will try to mount a cleaning cartridge from one of its system cells to clean the drive before sending the host the dismount response.  There are no cleaning media in the system cells because they are instead in normal library cells accessible by HSC or ACSLS.

Solution

If ACSLS or HSC automated cleaning is on, but drives are not being cleaned, check if the library also has auto cleaning turned on. If auto cleaning is enabled at the library, turn it off via SL Console (SLC).

To do this, use either the SL Console or the Operator Panel:

  1. Go to System Detail
  2. Select Library
  3. Select the Auto Clean tab
  4. Select the Configure tab

See if Auto Cleaning is enabled for this partition (or "Partition 1 or None").

  • If automated cleaning is enabled, disable it with SL Console.
