Symptoms

The Sun External I/O Expansion Unit PSU Status may become either Faulted or Degraded after removal and insertion of the AC power cords.

XSCF>showstatus

IOU#0 Status:Normal;
        PCI#1 Status:Normal;
            IOX@X0U4 Status:Normal;
              PS0 Status:Faulted;
              PS1 Status:Faulted;
    IOU#1 Status:Normal;
        PCI#1 Status:Normal;
            IOX@X0PH Status:Normal;
            PS1 Status:Faulted;

Changes

The Sun External I/O Expansion Unit PSU Status will become Faulted or Degraded after removal and insertion of the AC  power cords with the power switch in the ON position.  The XSCF 'clearfault' command will not  be able to clear the status prior to required steps to be taken on the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit.

Cause

The root of this problem appears to be an issue with the micro controller within the PSU. When this problem occurs, their appears to several asserted GPIO pins on the controller, indicating error conditions that don't actually exist. The Fan Controller then reads these registers and notifies iomgr about the error conditions. iomgr then logs these errors and writes to the PSU SEEPROM, faulting the PSU.

Solution

The Sun External I/O Expansion Unit Status LED will be lit, in addition to the XSCF showstatus reporting the PSU as Faulted or Degraded. A series of steps must be executed on the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit prior to executing the 'clearfault' command on the XSCF. Otherwise the Fault Status will return and the Status LED will remain lit.

Steps to be Taken on the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit to clear fault state on the unit's micro-controller

1. Shutdown the domain(s) connected to the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit (unit must be in quiesced state)

2. Turn both power switches on the  Sun External I/O Expansion Unit to  the OFF position

3. Remove the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit's AC power cords  (Important:  wait >30 seconds or more to allow the capacitors to discharge)

4. Insert the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit's AC power cords

5. Turn both  power switches on  the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit to the ON position

6. Fault state on micro-controller status register is now cleared

Steps to be Taken on the XSCF utilizing the 'clearfault' command

Note: In XCP1115 and later clearfault does not require service mode.

1. Enter service mode  (requires an service mode password, provided by TSC directly or in a Shared Shell Session)

Example

XSCF> enableservice
Service Password:
****************************

2. Once in service mode - utilize  the 'clearfault' command:

Example:

XSCF> clearfault /IOX@X0U4/PS0
XSCF> clearfault /IOX@X0U4/PS1
XSCF> clearfault /IOX@X0PH/PS1

--------------------------------------------------

3. Enter the 'showstatus' command to verify Fault Status has been cleared

Internal Comments

Reference CR 6663382 "PSUs are being marked either degraded or faulted" which outlines a defect within the Sun External I/O Expansion Unit micro-controller F/W setting False Status Register Bit, when the AC power cords are removed vs. utilizing the power switches.
