Symptoms

Primitive sequence errors
Hangs SAN
Loss of signal
Loss of synchronization
Timeout
Link Down messages in /var/adm/messages on Sun Solaris
Encode errors on Brocade Switch error logs for the port in question

Cause

Primitive sequence timeout errors can be caused by loss of light, bad cable or defective tape drive.

Solution

-If the problem is occurring on only one drive, check the cable connection or possibly a bad drive.

-If there are multiple drives check for loss of light problem somewhere within the SAN. This could be HBA, fibre cable or switch.

-Make sure 50 micron cables are being used rather then 62.5 micron cable as this can have an effect on this issue.
