Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1008351.1 : Brocade Silkworm[TM] Switch portPhys State "Mod_Val"
PreviouslyPublishedAs 211422 Symptoms Some ports in a Brocade Silkworm[TM] 200/E Switch showed portPhys State as "Mod_Val". Fabric OS: v5.0.1a Authentication: None Resolution "Mod_Val" is not documented to be a valid state in either the Fabric OS online help or Brocade hardware documentations. It was however, mentioned in some Fabric OS release notes where bugs in the firmware left a port in the "Mod_Val" state. Therefore we could assumed that "Mod_Val" is supposed to be an internal port state that was not meant to be presented to the end-user, but occurs when a certain error condition is met. For troubleshooting purposes, a port state of "Mod_Val" can be indicative of a fault state, but the cause may be hardware or firmware, therefore, normal hardware fault isolation must be performed to rule out component failures. In the specific case above, the cause was determined to be faulty SFP in all 3 ports (5, 6 and 7) showing "Mod_Val". Replacing all 3 SFP's resolved the problem. In cases listed in Fabric OS release notes where "Mod_Val" state occurs due to firmware issues, disable/enable the port may resolve the problem.
