Solution Type Problem Resolution Sure Solution 1008161.1 : Access to Volumes on Sun Storage Arrays May Cause ASC=0x94 ASCQ=0x1 Errors
PreviouslyPublishedAs 211215 Applies to:Sun Storage 6780 Array - Version All Versions and laterSun Storage 6180 Array - Version All Versions and later Sun Storage 6540 Array - Version All Versions and later Sun Storage 2530-M2 Array - Version Not Applicable and later Sun Storage 2540-M2 Array - Version Not Applicable and later All Platforms SymptomsWhen a volume on a Sun Storage Array is accessed by the host using the format command, the SCSI command may fail with the error: Illegal request during read
ASC: 0x94 ASCQ: 0x1 Warning: error reading backup label. The following messages would then appear on a Solaris host in /var/adm/messages: Mar 23 09:47:31 TestHost1 scsi: WARNING: /pci@1d,700000/SUNW,qlc@2/fp@0,0/ssd@w2000000000000000,1 (ssd7):

CauseThe request is illegal because the volume is not owned by the controller receiving the request. Sense 05 = Illegal Request These errors can occur when a LUN on the standby path is probed during boot, or when the format command is executed. SolutionPlease check your host multipathing solution, and your host type setting for your initiator/host port. For more information about the pairing of a specific multipath solution and host type, please review <Document 1003750.1> How to choose an Initiator Host Type for Sun Storage[TM] 6000 and Sun StorageTek[TM] 2500 Arrays. Any host type can experience this event. The error denotes a specific SCSI code defined by the vendor, but can occur on any host attached to the array. Different host operating systems provide and interpret SCSI sense data in different fashions.
