Sun Storage 9990 System - Version Not Applicable and later
JNI FC HBA - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Solaris Operating System - Version 10 10/08 U6 to 10 10/08 U6 [Release 10.0]
All Platforms

Symptoms

Logical Unit Numbers(LUNs) cannot be configured using the command:

  cfgadm -c configure c#

Cause

The error "Failed to get the type" is seen in luxadm command output.

Example:
luxadm -e dump_map /devices/pci@8,700000/SUNW,qlc@3/fp@0,0:devctl
Pos Port_ID Hard_Addr Port WWN Node WWN Type
0 664f13 0 50060e800428a551 50060e800428a551 Failed to get the type.
1 610b13 0 210000e08b1c4dd6 200000e08b1c4dd6 0x1f (Unknown Type,Host Bus Adapter)

 Or this:

Pos  Port_ID Hard_Addr Port WWN         Node WWN         Type
0    1f0520  0         50001442b009f701 50001440477009f7 Failed to get the type.
1    1f0620  0         50001442a0065c01 500014404760065c 0x0  (Disk device)
2    1f056e  0         c0007d9a75245698 c0007d9a75245699 0x1f (Unknown Type,Host Bus Adapter)

In the above example, if there is an NPIV configured with the a Qlogic HBA, the Qlogic HBA does not log into the a target port that has the same AREA byte in the FCID. Refer to Bug 18248461 - backport 15803664 to 11.2sru - SUNBT7183910 FC target should be allowed for PLOG. Note the Area byte (05) of EMC VPLEX FE ports is the same as area byte of HBA (05).

In addition, the /var/adm/messages file will have similar entries as the following:
Feb 17 08:47:58 host_name fp: [ID 517869 kern.info] NOTICE: fp(5): PLOGI to 10300 failed state=Timeout, reason=Hardware Error
Feb 17 08:47:58 host_name fctl: [ID 517869 kern.warning] WARNING: fp(5)::PLOGI to 10300 failed. state=c reason=1.
Feb 17 08:47:58 host_name PLOGI to D_ID=0x10300 failed: State:N_Port Reject, Reason:Undefined. Giving up

Solution

The error message "Failed to get the type", is generally due to LUN permissions on the storage array. It is also possible that this condition can show up if no LUN is mapped to the target ID/storage port.

Things to check:

1. Ensure the host has read/write permissions. LUN Security on the storage arrays can cause the above condition.

2. Verify that the Target ID/storage port has at least one LUN mapped to it.

3. Verify that the Host Bus Adapter's(HBA) Port World-Wide Number(WWN) for the subject LUN, has read/write permission set. In the example above, the Port WWN is 210000e08b1c4dd6.

4. For Solaris release 11.2 or 11.3, make sure the system is running SRU 13 or higher.

In rare situations the Fibre Channel (FC) Switch port can also cause "Failed to get the type".

Moving the cable to another FC Switch port (if available) can be used to work around issue.

If the FC Switch is under Oracle support see following doc otherwise contact your NON-Oracle FC Switch support vendor.

Fibre Channel (FC) Switch-Based Connectivity Issues - Basic information and data needed by Oracle support [ID 1450759.1]

Note:

This behavior has also been known to be caused by a bug in the EMC Storage Array Firmware. Array Type: EMC VMAX 20K

The recommendation from EMC was to upgrade the Array firmware code.

Current code: 5876.163.105
Suggested code: 5876.272.177
