Cause

The ASC/ASCQ code pair 0x8b/0x2 is a vendor unique code defined as "Quiescence Is In Progress or Has Been Achieved."

This error is generated if a read or write command to a volume is issued to an array controller that does not own the volume at the time of command execution, or if the volume is in the middle of a transition between controllers.

Solution

The error message is benign. A read or write command was sent to a controller when it was in a temporary quiescence state. The next retry of the command is usually successful. If the errors persist, one of the following issues may be responsible.

  • Physical link problem - faulty hardware in a host bus adapter, fibre channel cable, SFP or array controller.
  • Incorrect or out-of-date device driver and/or host bus adapter code.
  • Incorrect multipathing configuration. Please refer to the appropriate multipathing matrix for your array by conducting a search using the model of your array followed by the words "multipath software compatibility matrix."  For example, search for "6140 multipath software compatibility matrix".
  • Incorrect settings for host initiators. Please refer to <Document 1003750.1> How to choose an Initiator Host Type for Sun Storage[TM] 6000 and Sun StorageTek[TM] 2500 Arrays.
  • Incorrect configuration of MPxIO on a Solaris host. Please refer to <Document 1333027.1> Verifying STMS (MPxIO) Health on StorageTek 2500, Sun Storage 2500-M2 and Sun Storage 6000 Series Arrays.

The error code ASC 0x8b / ASCQ 0x2 is not specific to Solaris and can be seen in other operating systems also.
