Applies to:

Sun StorageTek L1400 Tape Library - Version All Versions to All Versions [Release All Releases]
Information in this document applies to any platform.
__________

Affected Parts:

419738102 - FRU, Interface Control Module, SCSI to FC Router

Symptoms

The customer will no longer have the licensed features that they purchased.

Impact

If a Sun StorageTek L1400 Tape Library customer has any of the following...

  slot licensing,
  partitioning licensing,
  continuous capacity licensing or
  library aggregation licensing

...a backup of the Interface Control Module configuration file is mandatory. If Interface Control Module (ICM) is replaced without a backup, the customer will lose all of their licensing. The only option to recover from this is to reinstall the original ICM card.

Changes

Any L1400 customer who has purchased any licensed features could be impacted by this issue.  Any firmware on the Interface Control Module lower than 5.8.25 might cause adverse configuration issues and could also cause the configuration file to not be able to be downloaded.  All Interface Control Modules should be upgraded to the latest 5.8.25 firmware.

Cause

This is caused by replacing the Interface Control Module without first saving the configuration file off of the Interface Control Module.  If that is not done then there is no way for Oracle to reissue the licenses since Crossroads EOLed the Interface Control Module and no longer issues support or licenses.

Solution

Workaround

If the Interface Control Module needs to be replaced, Field Engineers must save the configuration file and keep it in a safe and known location so it can be retrieved at a later date.

First the Interface Control Module should be at the latest 5.8.25 firmware before pulling the configuration file.  So if the Interface Control Module is found to have a lower firmware, it should first be upgrade it to 5.8.25.

To get the configuration file from the original Interface Control Module before it is replaced, follow the following steps:

  1. Log into the Interface Control Module's IP address with a Web Browser
  2. From the main page click on the “Utilities” menu to the left side of the page
  3. Then click on the “FTP Utility” link to the bottom left of the page
  4. Enter the username and password and the IP address and then click on the “Connect” button
  5. Click on the “Browse” button to choose a file name and directory, save the configuration file to it
  6. Select “Binary” for a binary transfer
  7. Click “Get from Rtr” to retrieve the configuration file from the Interface Control Module and save it in a safe and known location so that if it is needed in the future it can easily be found and accessed.

Please see the following documentation for reference on the Interface Control Module:

Resolution

The only way to resolve this is to have the configuration file that was saved off at an earlier date.

If the new Interface Control Module is found to be running a lower firmware than 5.8.25 then it should first be upgraded to 5.8.25 and then the configuration file can be loaded.

To load a configuration file onto a newly replaced Interface Control Module please follow the following steps:

  1. Log into the Interface Control Module's IP address with a Web Browser
  2. From the main page click on the “Utilities” menu to the left of the page
  3. Then click on the “FTP Utility” link to the bottom left of the page
  4. Enter the username and password and the IP address and then click on the “Connect” button
  5. Once you are connected to the Interface Control Module click on “Browse” to browse for the configuration file that was saved at an earlier date.Once you are connected to the Interface Control Module click on “Browse” to browse for the configuration file that was saved at an earlier date
  6. Select “Binary” for a binary transfer
  7. Click on “Put to Rtr” to transfer the file to the Interface Control Module
  8. Once a valid configuration file has been transferred to the Interface Control Module it will reboot which will cause the configuration settings to be loaded to the Interface Control Module and this will populate the licenses that the customer had purchased for their L1400 library.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

No visual inspection is needed as the Interface Control Module just would need to have the configuration file retrieved from it and stored in a safe and known place.
