__________

Affected Parts:

7038476 A256 600 Watt AC Input Power Supply
7047410 A256 600 Watt AC Input Power Supply
7060951 A256 600 Watt AC Input Power Supply

Symptoms

Power Supply will fail indicating a loss of AC Input.
FMA will report- "Fault class : fault.chassis.power.ext-fail"

Impact

Power Supplies (part numbers listed in Affected Part Numbers section above) may fail earlier than expected indicating an AC input failure.  A single PSU failure will not bring the system down as the second PSU will take care of system power needs until the failed PSU can be replaced.

The X3-2L (formerly Sun Fire X4270 M3) and the X4-2L platforms are not impacted by this issue as it uses a different power supply.

Changes

Failures generally occur 200-300 days after install. Dispatches have been higher than expected for a few manufacturing date codes, but overall failure rate is less than 3%.

Cause

A diode within the power supply is the root cause of this issue.  Services spares were cleaned up via GSAP 6239.

Solution

Workaround

No workaround available - see Resolution section below.

Resolution

This is a Conditional FCO.  Most PSU failures are to be resolved via standard fix-on-fail process.  Upon experiencing a loss of AC Input power resulting in a failed PSU with part number 7038476, 7047410 or 7060951 replace with 7079395. Only the failed PSU should be replaced - this FCO does not authorize the replacement of both power supplies in the impacted system.

Evaluation for meeting failure criteria is the sole discretion of Level-2 TSC engineers.

Attn TSC- when using ATR to order a PSU replacement for this FCO make sure to choose the "Field Change Order/FCO" option in the Problem Overview field of the Dispatch Instructions and fill in "A0337-1" on the right side of the template for the FCO Number. This step is required for proper tracking of PSUs that have been replaced due to this issue.

Any requests to replace PSUs that have not failed must be addressed via the CCR process.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to)

Power Supply part numbers 7038476, 7047410 or 7060951 that have failed with Fault class : fault.chassis.power.ext-fail.

Hardware Remediation and Material Availability Details

Material Readiness to support this FCO was in place prior to FCO remediation start.

Comments

For parts replaced due to this issue, follow the below return instructions.

Shipping Return Label Instructions
Check Bad/Suspect box on Return Label and write 337 to the right of FCO# field.
For good PSUs ordered but not used, return unopened per standard process.
If opened but not used, mark the Shipping Return Label as Good.

As this FCO is not proactive, there is no affected Customer List or Customer Ready Document.
