Symptoms

Customer may get the message below if they choose to not preserve their existing configuration during system firmware update, or does a "set /SP reset_to_defaults=all" command and then resets the service processor ("reset /SP") or does a "set /SP reset_to_defaults=factory" command and then resets the service processor ("reset /SP");

     *** WARNING ***   *** WARNING ***   *** WARNING ***
     The system appears to be in manufacturing test mode.
     Contact Service immediately.

There is no risk of data loss or data corruption involved in this scenario.  However, the recommendation is to update system firmware as stated in the Resolution section below.

Impact

When a system is upgraded to SysFW 8.1.0.a and the customer chooses the option to not preserve their existing configuration or does a "set /SP reset_to_defaults=all" command and then resets the service processor ("reset /SP") or does a "set /SP reset_to_defaults=factory" command and then resets the service processor ("reset /SP"), a warning message will be displayed during the system boot that states the system appears to be in "manufacturing test mode" and to contact Service immediately.

Changes

 Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following Platforms/Releases:

 SPARC T3-1 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.a as delivered in patch 147315-01
 SPARC T3-1B with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.a as delivered in patch 147318-01
 SPARC T3-2 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.a as delivered in patch 147316-01
 SPARC T3-4 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.a as delivered in patch 147317-01
 Netra SPARC T3-1 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.a as delivered in patch 147319-01

Solution

 Workaround

No workaround available - see Resolution section below.

Resolution

We have generated a new version of ILOM, the change has been included in SysFW 8.1.0.c available in the following patches;

    SPARC T3-1 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.c <SUNPATCH:147315-02>
    SPARC T3-1B with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.c <SUNPATCH:147318-02>
    SPARC T3-2 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.c <SUNPATCH:147316-02>
    SPARC T3-4 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.c <SUNPATCH:147317-02>
    Netra SPARC T3-1 with Sun System Firmware version 8.1.0.c <SUNPATCH:147319-02>

To address this issue, either go back to SysFW 8.0.4.c (or earlier) version or use SysFW 8.1.0.c (or later) version of system firmware. Load the firmware but do not preserve the existing configuration, and then reset the service processor using reset to defaults. Below are the commands to load the firmware and reset the service processor.

-> load -source <path_to_sysfw_image>

NOTE: An upgrade takes several minutes to complete. ILOM will enter a special mode
           to load new firmware. No other tasks can be performed in ILOM until the
           firmware upgrade is complete and ILOM is reset.

Are you sure you want to load the specified file (y/n)? y
Preserve existing configuration (y/n)? n

Then reset the SP after loading the firmware with the following two commands:

-> set /SP reset_to_defaults=all
-> reset /SP

Comments

The ILOM 3.0.16.1 branch has the .exclude directive in the GNUmakefile.features for all the Volume SPARC platforms set so the manufacturing test mode will always be present if the customer chooses the option to not preserve their existing configuration on firmware upgrade or does a "set /SP reset_to_defaults=all" command and then resets the service processor ("reset /SP"), or does a "set /SP reset_to_defaults=factory" command and then resets the service processor ("reset /SP").
