Impact

Fan connectors on the Fan Boards can be damaged upon Fan removal/replacement.  If the connector is damaged once the fan module is removed, that location will not be able to be used subsequently.  The system may still operate but there is a risk of the system overheating.

Contributing Factors

Fans should not be rocked back and forth when being removed.  Rather they should be pulled straight up, using care to avoid damaging the Fan Board connectors.

Symptoms

The fan will not be able to connect properly to the fan board and the system may show the warning message "fan not present in fanbd0/fan1".

Root Cause

The fan board connectors cannot withstand the lateral pull forces applied if the fan is removed at an angle.

Corrective Action

Workaround:

Care needs to be taken when fans are removed/replaced to avoid damaging the Fan Board connectors.  Fans should not be rocked back and forth when being removed.  Rather they should be pulled straight up, using care to avoid damaging the Fan Board connectors.

Resolution:

There is no resolution other than what is listed in the Workaround section above.
