Impact

Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 systems installed with specific Linux versions without the required LSI drivers will not boot or recognize the hard disks.

Contributing Factors

The affected versions of Linux are:

  • RHEL3 U5  (Red Hat)
  • RHEL4 U1  (Red Hat)
  • SLES9 SP1 (Novell)

The following Linux versions contain the correct LSI drivers, and are NOT affected:

  • RHEL3 U6: kernel-2.4.21-37.EL and later (released Sep 2005 or later)
  • RHEL4 U2: kernel-2.6.9-22.EL and later (released Oct 2005 or later)
  • SLES9 SP2:kernel-2.6.5-7.191 and later (released Jul 2005 or later)

Root Cause

The LSI controller used in the Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 systems was new and therefore unsupported in older versions of Linux distributions.  RHEL3 U5, RHEL4 U1 and SLES9 SP1 have the older versions of LSI drivers, which do not have the required LSI SAS1064 mptlinux driver.

To avoid additional installation steps, customers should use Linux distribution versions RHEL3 U6, RHEL4 U2 and SLES9 SP2, or later. These versions are available from the Red Hat and Novell Linux vendors respectively.

Resolution

A. If a customer installs RHEL3 U6, RHEL4 U2, or SLES9 SP2, follow standard Linux installation procedures, as specified by each vendor.  No additional Sun platform specific steps are required.

B. If a customer installs RHEL3 U5, RHEL4 U1, or SLES9 SP1, additional installation steps are required.

The required LSI drivers are available through the Sun Installation Assistant CD and the Resource CD which are included with each Sun Fire X4100 and X4200 system.  These CDs may be downloaded from http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=436bd009 .

Installation steps using either the Sun Installation Assistant CD or the Resource CD are outlined in manual 819-1158, Sun Fire X4100 and Sun Fire X4200 Servers Operating System Installation Guide, located at: https://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19121-01/sf.x4100m2/819-1158-25/819-1158-25.pdf.
