Solution Type FAB (standard) Sure Solution 1000944.1 : DWWN feature being added back into the Storage Tek 9x40 drive microcode at rev 1.36.x04 and Storage Tek T10000A code at 1.33.107.
PreviouslyPublishedAs 201261 Product Sun StorageTek 9940 Tape Drive Sun StorageTek 9840B Tape Drive Sun StorageTek L8500 Tape Library Date of Resolved Release 22-JUN-2007 Xoption
Impact The Dynamic World Wide Naming (DWWN) feature for FICON 9x40 drives was first implemented in 1.35.x10 drive code and T10000A in 1.33.107 code. An issue in these drive microcode levels (along with L8500 code 3.08) was soon discovered which keeps drives from coming online. Library microcode 3.11C code managed the problem in that it effectively removed the dynamic world wide name feature from the library for FICON drives until the drive reaches a minimum TTI revision level. 1.36.x04 drive code release added the FICON DWWN feature back in for 9x40 devices and provides a TTI rev of 4.09 back to the library. 1.33.107 drive code release added the FICON DWWN feature back in for T10000A devices and provides a TTI rev of 5.0 back to the library. The library will recognize this TTI rev and automatically set world wide names into drives running with this code. After the drive is installed in the StorageTek L8500, the DWWN will automatically be changed to the appropriate value assigned to its bay position. (see the DWWN Operation section below for details) The FICON environment may not associate this new WWN to the original drive. To resolve this issue, the switch may need to be reconfigured or a system/LPAR may need to be rebooted. The resolution is configuration dependent and needs to be addressed during the conversion. Contributing Factors StorageTek L8500 when attached StorageTek 9x40 and/or T10000A. Symptoms The FICON environment may not associate this new WWN to the original drive and will not recognize the drive. Root Cause Any FICON 9x40 drives running with 1.36.x04 drive code or FICON T10000A with 1.33.107 code will get it's World Wide Name changed by the L8500 library. The customer must be prepared for this and be ready to handle this WWN change. If you install 1.36.x004 (9x40) or 1.33.107 (T10000A) code in your FICON drives, you must also be running a minimum of 3.11C code in the SL8500 library. Workaround No workaround available - see Resolution section below. Resolution To resolve any switch WWN recognition issue, the switch may need to be reconfigured or a system/LPAR may need to be rebooted. The resolution is configuration dependent and needs to be addressed during the conversion. DWWN Operation: During manufacturing we burn-in a single DWWN per L8500 Library and based upon that original WWN, additional WWNs are assigned to that library by the embedded code of the L8500. With an example seed value of 500104F00078CB0E the library code reserves the first 16 (10 hex) values for the Library FICON interfaces. Is includes a possible maximum of 8 ports with a possible 8 nodes depending on the configuration. Drive tray assignments are then allocated starting at drive bay 1. The HBT card (drive interface) is given the drive WWN base value of 500104F00078CB1E. Drive WWNs are assigned by the drive Bay Number starting with drive bay 1 and ending with drive bay 64. Example: Drive Bay 1 Node Name 500104F00078CB1E Drive Bay 1 Port A Name 500104F00078CB1F Drive Bay 1 Port B Name 500104F00078CB20 Drive Bay 2 Node Name 500104F00078CB21 Drive Bay 2 Port A Name 500104F00078CB22 Drive Bay 2 Port B Name 500104F00078CB23 ----------------_ETC_------------------- Drive Bay 64 Node Name 500104F00078CBDB Drive Bay 64 Port A Name 500104F00078CBDC Drive Bay 64 Port B Name 500104F00078CBDD
The following was extracted from the 3.08 L8500 Release Notes: RISKS: T10000 AND 9X40 FICON DRIVE CUSTOMERS WHO ARE CURRENTLY USING FIXED WWN IN THEIR FICON CHANNEL CONFIGURATIONS AND INSTALL 1.36.x04 CODE, ARE EXPOSED TO A ONE-TIME OCCURRENCE WHERE ALL OF THE TAPE DRIVES WILL BE ASSIGNED THE NEW WWNS AND NO LONGER BE SEEN BY THE OPERATING SYSTEM/S. THIS WILL REQUIRE THE CUSTOMER TO RE-MAP THEIR DRIVE WWNS TO MATCH THE NEW ONES. AFTER THIS IS COMPLETED THE NEED TO RE-MAP WWNS WILL NO LONGER EXIST IN THOSE CONFIGURATIONS. TAPE DRIVE REPLACEMENTS AND/OR RELOCATIONS WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE ASSIGNED THE SAME WWN AS ANY PREVIOUSLY INSTALLED DRIVE IN THAT SPECIFIC LIBRARY SLOT. THE RECOMMENDED PROCEDURE IS FOR THE CSE TO COORDINATE THE CODE UPGRADE WITH THE CUSTOMER AND INCLUDE REASSIGNING DRIVE WWNS TO MATCH THOSE ASSIGNED BY THE LIBRARY. When enabled, DWWN assigns names to library drive slots rather than devices. When a drive is replaced, the new drive receives the same name/s as the one replaced, thereby eliminating the need for system re-configuration. Note: There are three Worldwide Names reserved for the library and each drive slot: Node, Port A, and Port B. This is being done to accommodate newer FIBRE switches (in place between the FICON director and the drive) which may be zoned by WWN. These switches can have mixed FIBRE and FICON ports controlled by zoning. The DWWN feature allows for FICON drive replacement without the need to rezone the Switch. The FICON director may still need to be reconfigured on drive replacements because of the drive serial number change but this is NORMAL and expected in the FICON mainframe world. Related Information
