Impact

Sun has identified a set of 512MB and 1GB Micron DIMMs that may experience early life failures displayed as uncorrectable memory error (UE) messages. Only a subpopulation of the 11 week date code range of 512MB and 1GB DIMMs are affected. The described issue typically occurs during the first 400 hours of memory module usage.

All suspect Micron DIMMs were integrated into systems or X-Option orders, or as FRU stock into the RSLs between the dates of January 31, 2007 and May 31, 2007.  Although DIMMs having a date code of 0715 or later are not affected, systems and xoptions that had already completed factory build/test were not purged and may have shipped as late as May 31, 2007.

DIMMs with part number of 501-7385-01 or 501-7386-01 shipped before January 31, 2007 or after May 31, 2007 are not considered suspect.  DIMMs manufactured by other than Micron are not impacted by this issue.

Contributing Factors

This issue can occur in the following Micron DIMMs:

  • 512MB DIMM with Part Number 501-7385-xx listed in Affected DIMMs file below
  • 1GB DIMM with Part Number 501-7386-xx listed in Affected DIMMs file below

The following SPARC Platforms and Products are known to be affected:

Systems, X-Options, and FRU stock shipped between the dates of January 31, 2007 and May 31, 2007 with part number 501-7385 512MB DIMMs or part number 501-7386 1GB DIMMs within the following Model Numbers...

Sun Fire V490/V890/V480/V880/V1280/280R
  Sun Fire   3800/48x0/6800
Sun Fire E2900/E4900/E6900/E20K/E25K/F12K/F15K
  Sun Blade  1000/2000
  Netra      20/1280
X7051A 2GB (4x512MB SDRAM DIMMs) FRU p/n 501-7385
X7056A 4GB (4x1GB SDRAM DIMMs) FRU p/n 501-7386

Note: This may not be an exhaustive list of systems these DIMM part numbers are supported in and which may, therefore, be impacted by affected DIMMs from Services Spares.

Symptoms

Multiple uncorrectable memory failures in a single machine, and sample specific strings including:

Multiple Softerrors
Sticky Softerrors accumulated ...
unix: [ID 340762 kern.notice] from Memory Module ...
Uncorrectable system bus (UE) Event on CPU0
Privileged Data Access at ...
WARNING: [AFT1] EDU Event on CPU0 ...ECC errors ..
WARNING: [AFT1] WDU Event on ...UE EDU WDU Error(s)...

NOTE: The specific error messages a customer will see will be dependent on the version of Solaris being run. Solaris 8, 9, and 10 all vary to some degree with the error messages logged at the time of these errors.

Root Cause

The affected Micron DIMMs were manufactured in an anomalous process which has proven to enhance the likelihood of early life failures of the DRAMs on the DIMMs.

The anomalous process was corrected at the vendor and all DIMMs shipped after May 31, 2007 are not affected.  Manufacturing was purged of all affected DIMMs via StopShip/Purge P001-20398 as of May 31, 2007.  All Service Regional Stocking Locations (RSLs) were purged of affected material via GSAP 3959 starting on June 29, 2007.

DIMM Tray FRU Kits, containing 25 DIMMs each, were released via ECO WO_37917.  These 25 x DIMM Tray FRUs should only be used in the implementation of this FAB.

Implementation Target Completion Dates:

AMER: March 7, 2009
APAC: March 19, 2009
EMEA: March 19, 2009

Replacement Time Estimate: 30 minutes

Resolution

Hot Swappable: No

Important: As of March 19, 2009 the implementation of this FCO changed from Proactive (Mandatory) to Reactive (Upon Failure). Upon Failure only replace as follows:

  • replace affected 501-7385-01 with 501-7385-01 (or above)
  • replace affected 501-7386-01 with 501-7386-01 (or above)

For orders equal to or greater than 25 DIMMs for per part number order as follows:

  • 511-1030-01 contains 25 of 501-7385 (512MB DIMMs)
  • 511-1031-01 contains 25 of 501-7386 (1GB DIMMs)

Example 1: If customer has 28 affected 512MB DIMMs you should order the following:

   1 x 511-1030  and 3 x 501-7385

Example 2: If customer has 26 affected 512MB DIMMs and 12 affected 1GB DIMMs you should order the following:

  1 x 511-1030, 1 x 501-7385, and 12 x 501-7386

Note: Tray FRUs will be in Micron shipping boxes versus Sun boxes.  Individual DIMM FRUs will however continue to be in normal Sun packaging.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Not all DIMMs PN# 501-7385-01 and 501-7386-01, on a listed System or UniBoard, are affected by this FCO. Please be sure to verify that ONLY affected DIMMs are replaced by following the identification instructions of this FCO.

Identification of Affected Parts (how to):

Sun Service Representatives and those with access inside of SWAN should use the showfru command to determine how many DIMMs are impacted by this issue. This tool can be acquired via the below (Internal Only) website;

  http://panacea.uk.oracle.com/twiki/bin/view/Tools/ToolPageShowfru

For those who do not have SWAN access, open a Case against the System Serial Number with the Call Center and request an analysis of the FRU data from the Call Center Engineer responsible for the Case based on Explorer data.

The Affected DIMM List can be viewed via the below URL;
