The Ethernet port on the controllers for the above listed products and firmware may not work properly while attached to an Ethernet Switch port with auto-negotiation disabled.

Ethernet switch port with auto-negotiation disabled on the following platforms:

• Sun StorEdge 6130 with firmware 06.xx
  
• Sun StorageTek 6140 with firmware 06.xx
  
• Sun StorageTek 6540 with firmware 06.xx
  
• Sun StorageTek 2530 with firmware 06.xx
  
• Sun StorageTek 2540 with firmware 06.xx
  

Connecting the controller ethernet port to an Ethernet Switch port with auto-negotiation disabled may lead the management application CAM (Common Array Manager) to lose the out-of-band connection with the controller.

A similar alarm as the following one could be reported in CAM:

   Site       : <site name> 
   Agent      : <agent name>
   Severity   : Major
   Category   : 1540
   Device Id  : <device name>
   Topic      : OutOfBand
   Event Type : CommunicationLostEvent
   Event Code : 68.12.31
   Event Date : <event date>

   Description:
   Lost oob communication with 1540 <device name>

Probable Cause:
This problem can be caused by a very slow network
or because the ethernet connection to this 6140 was lost.
This can also be caused by incorrect DHCP settings.
This problem can also be caused by loss of AC Power.

Recommended Action:
1. Check Ethernet Network Health to array
        Ethernet Cables
        Hubs, Routers, Switches
        LED Link status of connections.
2. Check the status of DHCP server (if using for Ethernet configuration).
3. Check AC power to array
        Power Cables
        Power Outlets
        Circuit Breakers
        Power to building

In addition to the above, CAM may report the array in a status degraded.

The above listed arrays, with 06.xx firmware, do not support the Ethernet Switch port with auto-negotiation disabled.

1. The field should check the auto-negotiation mode on the Ethernet Switch port
connected to the controller.

2. If the auto-negotiation mode is disabled, it has to be turned to enabled.

3. If CAM already lost the out-of-band communication to both array controllers,
the array will need to go through a power cycle.

4. If CAM lost the out-of-band communication to only one of the array controllers,
the field will be able to reset the affected controller using the GUI for CAM:
  a. Log into the Java Web Console.
  b. Click on "Sun StorageTek(TM) Common Array Manager".
  c. Expand the tree on the left window for the affected array.
  d. Go to Physical Devices -> Controllers.
  e. Click on "Reset Controller" for the affected controller (ie: A or B) that
    lost the out-of-band communication with CAM.

Resolution:

The firmware 07.xx supports the modification of the array ethernet speed and/or duplex by using the array management software.  Nevertheless, the recommendation is to use auto-negotiation if at all possible.
