Impact

On rare occasions the failure mechanism which failed the original port card can cause adjacent cards or all cards in the same backplane to be taken off-line as well.

Symptoms

UPM Port Card (PN: 370-5519) fails with #502-01 fault code. When the Port Card fails, I/O can not be routed through any of the four ports on the Port Card and results in a potential data accessibility issue.

Root Cause

Solder joints of marginal quality on the PWM IC from the 2.5V unit (S7AH-05C250) and the 1.8V units (S7AH-05C180). It is believe that there is also a risk of compromised reliability due to insufficient solder on pin 4 of the MOSFET in a much smaller number of the 2.5V units.

Workaround

Upgrade E/OS to version 7.1 by implementing patch 119550-01.

Resolution

The E/OS 7.1 firmware will power off the problem board before it can affect other boards in the same chassis.
